Shelter Cymru launched the innovative Peer Learning Project in 2003. Its aim is to train young homeless people to deliver information to their peers in schools and other organisations about homelessness and how to avoid becoming homeless.

The 'Plain Simple Truth' project delivers presentations throughout South Wales to schools and other organisations that work with young people. It provides information about homelessness, how to prevent it and what to do if it happens to you.

The information is based on the young peer educators' own experience of homelessness and housing problems.

Shelter Cymru has also produced a starter pack for other organisations that are interested in starting their own peer learning projects on housing and homelessness. You can download the pack from this website, and you can find out more about the project by contacting Jon Parvin on 01792 483074, or through email.

You can also obtain a full colour hard copy of the pack free of charge through the contact details above.

The Peer Learning Starter Pack is aimed at organisations that work with homeless or ex-homeless young people who wish to set up and deliver their own peer learning project on homelessness and housing issues for young people.

It contains sections on:

  •  setting up a working agreement with a partner agency
  •  the recruitment process
  •  training materials
  •  residential training
  •  presentations
  •  feedback
  •  accreditation
