Key to the Door is a colourful bilingual board game designed
to raise awareness of the issues faced by young people who
are about to leave home. It won the 2001 Pat Chown Innovation
in Housing Award. It is currently being used widely by a variety
of organsiations as a tool for providing young people with
information on housing and homelessness in an entertaining
way.
The aim is to find a safe, secure and suitable place to live
– getting the Key to the Door. Players start at one
end of the 64 square full colour board, throw the dice in
turn, and pick up a card of the same colour as the square
they land on.
Cards are split into four main categories: Support and Advice,
Housing, Money, and Health and Experience. Each card contains
a scenario and tells the player to move back, stay on the
same square, or move forward depending on their situation.
The game can be stopped and the scenario on the card discussed.
Players will need good luck to reach the last square of the
board first and gain their Key to the Door. The game introduces
the assistance available and barriers young people will face
when leaving home.
Up to four players or teams can play the game. The game can
be used by young people or trainers to raise their awareness
in an entertaining format.
