Private renting

Some landlords think they can’t rent accommodation to people who are under 18 years old. Although the situation can be complicated, there’s nothing to stop a private landlord renting a place to someone under 18 if they want to. Some landlords may not want to do this, as they are afraid the rent may not be paid. You could ask an adult relative to be a guarantor – someone who guarantees to pay the rent if you can’t.

Private renting is generally the most expensive type of housing. If you rent privately you can be evicted easily even if you have done nothing wrong. The law covers you if you have a written contract or not. Although there are some disadvantages, private rented housing is available in most areas and you can normally move in quickly if you have money for a deposit and rent in advance.
