An activity to find out what sort of flatmate you’ll make.

It's about:
what it means to share a home.

Use it to:
reflect on the issues involved in living alone and sharing accommodation with others.

Ways of working:
a worksheet creates a focus for discussion.

For use with:
groups of young people from 14 upwards.

You will need:
a copy of the To share or not to share worksheet (below) for each group member.

Download the To Share or not to share worksheet.

You will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file. If you don't have it you can download it here.

Discussion points:

  • What are the key factors in deciding whether to live alone or with others?
  • Have you heard from others (possibly brothers or sisters) about the joys and pitfalls of living away from home? What have you learned from them?
  • What would be the best and worst aspects of leaving home to set up on your own?

Step-by-step:

Depending on the size of the group, split the group into sub-groups or ask people to work alone.
Distribute the To share or not to share worksheet (or work with the whole group using a flip chart).
Ask each group/individual to select the words which they think best describe living on your own, living with a partner and sharing with friends.
Ask each group to feedback which descriptions they put in each column and discuss their responses.
Have a group discussion on which option people would prefer when they leave home and why.
